It's Water Week!

Leading up to World Water Day on March 22nd, this week is dedicated to Earth's most valuable resource. Endangered as never before, our water supply is under threat: from pollution, climate change, and privatisation. Over the course of this week, I'll be posting here more often with water facts, tips on conservation, pointers for aquavism, and ways to whet your water awareness.

Not everyone has their head in the sand. Groups like Water Keepers are calling attention to the importance of conservation and numerous journalists and documentary filmmakers are producing work to remind the public that there is more to saving our wet environment than banning plastic bottles.

This photo was taken on the shore of Georgian Bay, not far from the spot where Ontario Power Generation is proposing to bury 200,000 cubic metres of "low" and "intermediate" level nuclear waste, 680 metres down into the limestone and shale near the town of Kincardine. An accident or leak at this site would threaten the entire Great Lakes watershed, source of more than 20 per cent of the world's fresh water. Public hearings on the issue finished in October 2013, but there is still a petition to be signed, urging the government to think again. A decision is expected sometime in 2014. As Michigan Senator Carl Levin says, "Forty million people in two countries rely on the Great Lakes daily for water." Why would you threaten that supply?
