Rusted shore
Driving along the Queen Elizabeth Way towards Niagara, this rusted hull sticking up out of Lake Ontario in Jordan Harbour is a landmark of a different kind. Many observers assume it's the wreck of a Great Lakes freighter, resting at the end of a long working life. It's not. This replica of the Grande Hermine (Big Weasel), Jacques Cartier's ship, was intended as a tourist attraction but has been abandoned for years. It was headed to Niagara for a possible future as a casino or restaurant, but that never happened. Her deck is overgrown with grass and her masts provide a home for dozens of migratory birds. The ship's ownership is unclear but it's entirely unseaworthy and is now pretty much derelict. One wonders, where is the legislation governing abandoned vehicles?
